Private sector secondments

MCnet has a collaboration with three privatesector companies who accepts secondments within our short-term studentship program

The secondments, that will typically last for three months, will allow you to get deeper insight into a company that might be a potential employer of you as a particle physicist. You can work on a sample project, participate with your particular experience from your PhD project and learn about modern software applications in real business.

This is a unique opportunity for you to get a glimpse of a day-to-day work experience in industry. This will definitely allow you to make a well-informed decision about your career after you have completed your PhD.


At Blue Yonder you will use complex machine learning models where a large number of parameters have to be adjusted from data. These fits have to be cross validated with very expensive function evaluations. The nature of the problem is quite similar to that of event generator tuning. In another project it is a challenge to link external data (wheather, stock indices, geo-location etc) to the internal data from customers to get an even better prediction of customer needs.

At d-fine you may work locally in the Frankfurt office and participate in the development of complex risk evaluation models. These models are mathematically demanding and often make use of Monte Carlo methods. You will typically be involved into a project directly at a customer where you will help to solve some risk analysis problems. Alternatively, you are working directly with the in-house software in the Frankfurt office. Ideally you have good programming experience. Some flexibility is required as it is difficult to predict where in Germany you will work, but it will definitely be challenging for you.

IBA makes intensive use of Monte Carlo transport codes such as MCNPX, PHITS, FLUKA and GEANT4 for the development of its different applications in the construction of Accelerator complexes for medical applications. Examples for typical projects include radiation protection studies for proton or hadron therapy systems, the study of an online proton range monitoring device, the study of the patient exposure to secondary neutrons produced during treatment or the study of the nuclear fragments impinging on a graphite energy degrader and their transport to a patient.
